About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of years. As a popular alternative therapy nowadays, practitioners and acupuncturists insert thin acupuncture needles into specific acupoints in order to relieve some health conditions and symptoms, such as pain. The acupoints are distributed along the flow of energy (qi) pathways called meridians.
How It Works?
TCM believes that qi disruptions create qi imbalances in the body which cause symptoms and lead to illness. Therefore, if people want to relieve the symptom or treat the illness, they must dredge the meridians first. By inserting acupuncture needles, the central nervous system can be stimulated, the body’s energy (qi) will be rebalanced, and the body will be prompted to release natural chemicals to fight the illness or symptom.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment alone or in combination with conventional therapies to treat the following:
- Nausea caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer chemotherapy
- Dental pain after surgery
- Addiction
- Headaches
- Menstrual cramps
- Tennis elbow
- Fibromyalgia
- Myofascial pain
- Low back pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome

Acupuncture Needles
Standardized acupuncture needles are safe to use since the profession and materials are highly regulated in Europe and North America. Medical equipment, moreover, is subject to a variety of norms and standards across Canada, all of which must be met in order for acupuncture needles to make it to the market, and to continue being sold.
Today, the most commonly used type of needles is the metal filiform needle, a thread-like needle that is made from stainless steel. The needles also come in different diameters (gauges) and lengths to be used on the different areas of the body where they are to be inserted. Acupuncturists nowadays use needles with a diameter between 0.12mm to 0.35 mm.
